“Zo waarlijk helpe mij Allah”, hiermee wilde Hasan Kücük (Islam-Democraten) zijn eed tot raadslid afleggen, maar van burgemeester Jozias van Aartsen moest hij zich houden aan de wettelijk erkende formule: “Zo waarlijk helpe mij God almachtig.” De vraag voor multicultureel Nederland is of deze formules niet open gemaakt moeten worden zodat men kan zweren bij de persoons levensbeschouwelijke heiligheid. De neutrale; “Dat zweer ik”, is al erkend, want een eed is betekenisloos als men niet kan zweren bij dat wat men op een religieus of humanistisch niveau heilig vindt. Om de eed dus de lading te geven die het moet hebben, moet het in mijn ogen worden toegelaten dat de eed afleggende persoon dat doet men wat voor hem/haar heilig is…

Laylat al-Qadr as Sacred Time: Sacred Cosmology in Sunni Kalam and Tafsir

In this analysis we will show how the Islamic tradition constructs a sacred cosmology wherein a sacred space and sacred time are defined. In Sunni Islam only a few sacred spaces on earth exist, the majority belong to the world unseen (alam al- ghayb) and are not accessible for the common human. But when there is a transfer between the seen and unseen world a sacred time is created which is accessible for the whole of creation. The most clear example of the creation of sacred time is Laylat al-Qadr, which is seen as sacred due to the sending down of the Qur’an and fate (qadar).
