Do you know what strikes me the most about the story of Hajar and Ismaeel?

It's not her amazing faith in Allah's decree, which she demonstrated when she calmly remained in the middle of a barren desert with her infant, watching her husband walk away from them because he had been ordered to by Allah.

It's not her fierce determination, as she scaled the distance between two small hills, not once, twice, but seven times, actively seeking a source of salvation from her precarious predicament when the odds seemed stacked up against her.

It's not even the wisdom she displayed when she quickly used her hands to fashion a basin to channel the waters of the miraculous spring into a pond, crying 'Zam! Zam! (Stop! Stop!)', preserving the well for billions of people across millennia to drink from its blessed waters.

What strikes me the most about Hajar's story is that despite being a vulnerable woman with an infant, despite being a solitary figure in the middle of a barren landscape, who could be easily overpowered and overcome by those with less honourable intentions, the Arab tribes that crossed her path respected her autonomy, and recognised her claim to the water she'd discovered.

They did not overpower her by the force of their numbers and the superiority of their physical strength.

They did not negate her rights to the most precious of commodities to be found in a desert, just because she was a woman.

They asked her humbly for permission to settle there. And they agreed that they had no right to possess ownership of the well.

And today, and for every day that anyone has or will perform Umrah or Hajj, millions of men, women and children will be following in the footsteps of a woman. They will be running between two hills to replicate her faith and determination in the face of adversity. And they will drink from a well that she fashioned by her own hand to prevent it from becoming a running river.

The greatest irony is that in our current climate, tainted by misogynistic culture, there is no way that such a vulnerable single mother with a baby, in possession of an invaluable resource, in a place without family or friend to protect her rights, would be treated with the honour and respect that Hajar received.

We see evidence of this indisputable fact every day. We see it when brothers conspire to defraud their vulnerable sisters of their rightful share of inheritance, or when men defraud their vulnerable wives of their right to mahr, or when ex-husbands withhold child support for their own children to punish vulnerable ex-wives for leaving the marriage.

Yet on our holiest of days, and in our holiest of rites, we are emulating the sunnah of a vulnerable Muslim woman.

May Allah have mercy upon our Mother Hajar. And may He enable us to raise young men who will honour the weakest and most vulnerable amongst us.
